Our Tutors
Rosalie Hines comes to adult literacy tutoring from a primary school teaching background.
'Although teaching adults requires some different skills the basics are the same and there are also similar problems.'
Rosalie trained as an adult tutor in 2005 and gained CALT level 5.
Her work with whanau literacy is well respected. Based at Forbury School, the Living on a Shoestring with Style course has become enormously popular. In 2007 Rosalie helped establish the programme with Ruth Groffman and they have been running it successfully together for the past two years.
'We find the programme works better when learners have input into what the sessions will cover. It also helps if the topics are practical and relevant.'
Rosalie believes in lifelong learning. On a personal level she has appreciated the opportunity to change direction in her own life. Her work with adult learners has given her the chance to use the teaching skills she has developed and put them to good use.

'Having the opportunity to improve someone's literacy skills is a privilege. Better literacy opens doors in people's lives - increasing their options and widening their lives. It can be life changing. And, as a tutor, I feel lucky to be able to make a difference. To see learners develop skills and make new friendships is amazing. And to see someone leave the course with more courage and confidence is the best reward.'
