Our Tutors

come from a variety of backgrounds and bring individual skills and talents that enrich and stimulate our poupou . Anybody can apply for tutor training, but those who are chosen, are chosen for their ability to respect and empathise with their students (and each other), for their flexibility, patience and their life experiences, as much as for their levels of literacy and numeracy.

Tutoring is seen as a partnership between student and tutor, following the philosophy Te Tiriti o Waitangi . All tutors receive a sound training in all aspects of the treaty, and in working with adult learners, goal-setting, lesson planning, assessing progress etc. and go on to complete their Certificate of Adult Literacy Teaching (Level 5).

The varied background and personalities of our tutors makes it easier to match tutors and students with each other. This is always done with a view to making the experience for both tutor and student more relaxed and enjoyable.

Teaching literacy is not an easy task, but for the dedicated tutor, the rewards are enormous. There is nothing so exciting as to see the progress a student is making - to know that your input has helped them either in the running of their day to day lives or in their workplaces.

We also have a lot of novels, factual books on many subjects and magazines.
