Literacy in Action

Student Writing Evening

On 11 September 2008 during Adult Learners' Week we held a student writing night in conjunction with the centenary of Dunedin Public Library.

The evening was launched by Barbara Frame from the Library, and took place in the Southern Sinfonia practice room upstairs from us in the Carnegie Centre.

Naturally, this room has great acoustics, which really came in handy as students from the Mens' Literacy, Womens' Literacy and Creative Writing groups read their poetry and prose. We made good use of the Sinfonia's collection of percussion instruments to accompany some of the reading with sound effects!

Tutors also spoke about the work they had done over the year, and we had some great musical performances from Tamara, who played the piano and sang, and from Aelred on the smallpipes.

To top it off, there was a beautiful display of hand-bound books from the book binding group. Literacy in Action
